How to Convert HEIC to JPG (3 Steps)
- Add your photos. Drag and drop one HEIC file — or a whole batch — into the box above. You can also tap to browse, or paste photos straight from your clipboard. JPG and PNG files are welcome too.
- Choose quality or an exact size. Leave the quality slider at 90 for the best-looking result, or switch to Exact size mode and pick 200KB, 100KB, 50KB — or type any KB limit a form demands.
- Download. Save each JPG with its own download button, or grab everything at once with Download All (ZIP).
Why Use This HEIC to JPG Converter?
- Batch conversion with no file cap. Most converters stop you at 20 or 30 files a day. Here you can convert a whole camera roll in one go and take it home as a single ZIP.
- Exact KB target mode. Need a photo under 200KB for a visa, exam or job form? The tool tests quality levels until the JPG fits your limit at the best possible quality — the same target-size engine as our Image Compressor.
- Real quality control. A slider from 10 to 100, plus a lossless PNG option when detail matters more than size — with before-and-after sizes for every photo.
- Private by design. Conversion runs on your device, using the libheif decoder in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone.
- Works on whatever you own. Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone, Chromebook — if it has a modern browser, it converts HEIC here. Nothing to install.
- Free, properly free. No account, no watermark, no "pro" unlock standing between you and a finished conversion.
What Is a HEIC File?
HEIC is the photo format Apple has used as the iPhone default since iOS 11 — the still-image flavour of HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format). It stores pictures in roughly half the space of an equivalent JPG by borrowing compression technology from modern video. On the phone that is great news: thousands more photos fit in the same storage.
The catch appears the moment a photo leaves the Apple world. Plenty of Windows programs, older photo editors, printers and — most frustratingly — online application forms still cannot open HEIC at all. You attach a photo to a visa application, a university portal or a job form and get an "unsupported format" error, or the photo shows up as a blank grey box. Converting HEIC to JPG fixes that instantly, because JPG is the one image format that literally everything opens.
HEIC vs JPG: What Is the Difference?
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Stands for | High Efficiency Image Container | Joint Photographic Experts Group |
| Typical file size | About half of an equivalent JPG | Roughly twice the HEIC size |
| Quality at the same size | Better — fewer compression artefacts | Good, but needs more bytes for the same detail |
| Compatibility | iPhone, Mac and newer software only | Universal — every device, browser and form |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported |
| Default on | iPhone (iOS 11 and later) | Android phones, cameras, the web |
Rule of thumb: keep HEIC on your iPhone to save space, and convert to JPG the moment a photo needs to be shared, printed, uploaded, or opened on anything that is not an Apple device.
How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Mac, Windows and iPhone
The converter above is the fastest route — it works on all three and handles batches. But each platform has a built-in method worth knowing.
On a Mac
Open the photo in Preview, choose File → Export, set the format to JPEG and save. The Photos app can export JPEG copies the same way. It works, but only one photo at a time, and neither app lets you aim for an exact KB size.
On Windows
Windows 10 and 11 can preview HEIC photos after installing Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions, but converting still means opening each photo in the Photos app and saving a copy — and some versions of that extension are paid or unavailable in certain regions. Dropping the files into this converter is faster, free, and adds batch and exact-size options Windows lacks.
On an iPhone
To stop your iPhone saving HEIC in the first place, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible — new photos will be saved as JPG (and will be noticeably larger). For existing photos, the Files app saves JPEG copies one by one; for a batch, open this page in Safari or Chrome and convert them together.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?
Drag your HEIC photos into the box at the top of this page (or tap to browse, or paste them). Leave the quality slider at 90 for an excellent balance, then download each JPG or the whole batch as a ZIP. There is no sign-up and no file limit, and it works the same on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No — never. This converter decodes and re-encodes your photos entirely on your own device using JavaScript in your browser. Your files are not uploaded, stored, or visible to us or anyone else, and closing the tab removes everything.
Can I convert HEIC to an exact size, like under 200KB?
Yes. Switch the tool to Exact size mode, choose the 200KB, 100KB or 50KB preset — or type any KB limit — and the converter automatically tests different quality levels until the JPG lands at or under your target, keeping the sharpest result that fits. It is exactly what most people need for exam, visa and job application forms.
Can I convert many HEIC files at once?
Yes — batch conversion is the whole point. Add as many HEIC, HEIF, JPG or PNG files as you like; each one is converted in turn with its own progress indicator, before-and-after file sizes, and its own download button. When two or more are ready, a Download All (ZIP) button appears so you can save the full set in one click.
Why won't my HEIC photos open on Windows?
Windows does not ship with a HEIC decoder enabled everywhere. Microsoft offers a HEIF extension through its Store, but it is not installed by default, some versions cost money, and plenty of programs — older Office versions, many web forms, some printers — cannot read HEIC even with it. JPG has no such problem, which is why converting is the reliable fix.
Will converting HEIC to JPG reduce the quality?
Slightly, in theory — JPG is a lossy format. In practice, at the default quality of 90 the difference is invisible to the eye in normal photos, and it is the setting most people should use. If you need a mathematically lossless copy instead, choose PNG as the output format; just expect noticeably larger files than JPG.
