Tip: the CGPA calculator is scale-agnostic — enter grade points out of 10 for Indian universities, or out of 4 for the Bangladesh scale, and the same weighted maths applies. Always confirm your university's published conversion rule before using a percentage on an official form.

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a single number that summarises your academic performance across all completed semesters. Instead of raw marks, courses award grade points — usually on a 10-point scale in India, or a 4.0 scale in Bangladesh — and your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of those grade points. A 4-credit course counts more than a 2-credit course, which is exactly why the formula weights each grade point by its credit hours.

CGPA matters because it is the number on your transcript that recruiters, universities and scholarship committees actually screen on. Many campus recruiters use 6.0 or 7.0 CGPA as a first cut-off, and postgraduate applications abroad ask for a percentage equivalent — which is why the conversion formulas below matter as much as the CGPA itself.

How to calculate CGPA (step by step)

CGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ Credit Hours. Take each subject, multiply its grade point by its credit hours, add all those products together, and divide by the total credit hours.

Worked example: you scored grade point 8 in a 4-credit subject, 7 in a 3-credit subject and 9 in a 2-credit subject. That is (8×4 + 7×3 + 9×2) ÷ (4+3+2) = (32+21+18) ÷ 9 = 71 ÷ 9 = 7.89. The calculator above does exactly this — add a row per subject, enter grade points and credits, and it returns the CGPA, total credits and an indicative classification.

For a single semester, the same calculation gives your SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average). Your CGPA is then the credit-weighted average of your SGPAs across semesters — or, equivalently, the same formula applied to every subject you have ever taken.

SGPA vs CGPA: the difference

SGPA covers one semester only; CGPA covers everything so far. A strong final semester lifts your SGPA a lot but moves your CGPA only a little, because earlier semesters still carry their weight. That is also the honest answer to "can I recover a bad first year": yes, but it takes sustained high grades, because the denominator — total credits — only grows.

CGPA to percentage: the formulas by university

There is no single universal conversion. The same 8.5 CGPA becomes 80.75% under CBSE's rule, 85% under a flat ×10 rule, and 77.5% under VTU's rule — a spread that can decide a shortlist. Always use your own university's published rule; the table below covers the major ones.

  • CBSE / AICTE / Delhi University — CGPA × 9.5. The most widely used rule. CBSE derived 9.5 from the average marks of top scorers (91–100 band averaged ~95 marks, divided by 10 grade points). Example: 8.5 CGPA = 80.75%.
  • Direct scale — CGPA × 10. Used by several state universities and autonomous colleges, and by Anna University. Example: 8.5 CGPA = 85%.
  • VTU / AKTU / JNTU — (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. These universities deduct an offset first. Example: 8.5 CGPA = (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%.
  • Mumbai University — 7.1 × CGPA + 11. A linear formula with an intercept. Example: 8.2 CGPA = 7.1 × 8.2 + 11 = 69.2%.
  • Custom multiplier. Some universities publish their own factor (for example × 9.25). Pick "Custom multiplier" above and enter it.

The converter shows the exact substitution it used — for example "8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%" — so you can quote the working on a form instead of just a bare number. If your mark sheet or university regulations print a conversion formula, that formula always wins over any calculator.

Bangladesh 4.0 grading scale

Bangladeshi universities grade on a 4.0 scale under the UGC pattern. The standard letter-grade table is: A+ (80% and above) = 4.00, A (75–79) = 3.75, A− (70–74) = 3.50, B+ (65–69) = 3.25, B (60–64) = 3.00, B− (55–59) = 2.75, C+ (50–54) = 2.50, C (45–49) = 2.25, D (40–44) = 2.00, F (below 40) = 0.00. Your CGPA on this scale uses the same weighted formula — grade points out of 4 instead of 10 — so the calculator above works unchanged: just enter your 4.0-scale grade points and credits.

One caution for Bangladeshi students applying abroad: a 3.75 out of 4.0 is not "93.75%" by simple multiplication, and foreign universities know it. Most ask for the transcript and apply their own credential evaluation. For local job forms, report the CGPA exactly as your university awarded it, and attach the university's conversion certificate if one exists.

How to improve your CGPA

Because CGPA is credit-weighted, the highest-leverage move is acing high-credit courses — a 4-credit A moves the needle twice as much as a 2-credit A. Next, protect the denominator: a failed or dropped course that stays on the transcript drags the average for every semester after it, so retaking it (where your university allows grade replacement) is usually worth more than an extra elective. Finally, plan backwards from the cut-off you need: if you need 7.5 and sit at 7.1 with 40 credits done, the calculator tells you exactly what average the remaining credits must carry.

Frequently asked questions

How is CGPA calculated?

CGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ Credit Hours. Multiply each subject's grade point by its credit hours, add the products, and divide by total credit hours. For example, grade points 8, 7 and 9 in 4, 3 and 2-credit subjects give (32+21+18) ÷ 9 = 7.89.

What is the CGPA to percentage formula?

The most widely used formula is CBSE's: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So 8.5 CGPA = 80.75%. But the formula depends on your university — VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, Mumbai uses 7.1 × CGPA + 11, and several universities use a flat × 10. Always use your university's published rule.

What is 8.5 CGPA in percentage?

It depends on the formula: 80.75% under CBSE × 9.5, 85% under a flat × 10, and 77.5% under VTU's (8.5 − 0.75) × 10. That is why the converter above asks for your university — the same CGPA maps to different percentages.

What is the Bangladesh CGPA grading scale?

Bangladeshi universities use a 4.0 scale: A+ (80+) = 4.00, A (75–79) = 3.75, A− (70–74) = 3.50, B+ (65–69) = 3.25, B (60–64) = 3.00, B− (55–59) = 2.75, C+ (50–54) = 2.50, C (45–49) = 2.25, D (40–44) = 2.00, F (below 40) = 0.00. CGPA is the credit-weighted average of these grade points.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA is the grade point average for a single semester; CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters so far, weighted by credit hours. CGPA is the number that appears on your final transcript.

Are my grades uploaded or stored when I use this calculator?

No. All calculations run in your browser. Your grades and results never leave your device, are never sent to a server, and are gone when you close the page.
