Tip: weights should add up to 100% for a finished course. If they don't yet — because the final hasn't happened — the weighted calculator shows the weight remaining, and the final-exam solver is the right tool for the missing piece.
What is a weighted grade?
A weighted grade is an average where each score counts in proportion to its weight, not equally. A final exam worth 40% of your course matters four times as much as a quiz worth 10% — so a simple average of your scores would lie to you. The formula is: Weighted grade = Σ (Score × Weight) ÷ Σ Weights. Every school, college and university that mixes assignments, midterms, projects and finals into one course grade is using some version of this formula, which is why a weighted grade calculator is the first tool students reach for at the end of a term.
How to calculate a weighted grade (worked example)
Say your course grades so far are: homework 88% (weight 20%), quizzes 92% (weight 30%), and midterm 76% (weight 20%), with the final worth the remaining 30% still to come. Your grade on completed work is (88×20 + 92×30 + 76×20) ÷ (20+30+20) = (1760 + 2760 + 1520) ÷ 70 = 6040 ÷ 70 = 86.3%. The calculator above does exactly this — add a row per item, enter score and weight, and it returns the weighted grade, the letter grade, and how much weight is still unaccounted for.
If your weights already add to 100% (the course is finished), the division is by 100 and the result is your final course grade. If they add to less, the result is your grade on completed work only — and the final-exam solver below tells you what the missing piece must be.
Final grade calculator: what do I need on my final?
This is the highest-intent grade question on the internet, asked every finals week: "I have 84%, the final is worth 30%, what do I need for an A?" The solver rearranges the weighted formula. If your current grade is C, the final is worth W (as a fraction), and your desired grade is D, then the required final score is: Required = (D − C × (1 − W)) ÷ W.
Worked example: current grade 84%, final worth 30% (W = 0.30), desired grade 90% (an A). Required = (90 − 84 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 58.8) ÷ 0.30 = 31.2 ÷ 0.30 = 104%. That is over 100% — mathematically impossible — so the calculator tells you plainly: an A is out of reach with this final, and shows what a realistic target looks like instead (for a B at 80%: (80 − 58.8) ÷ 0.30 = 70.7%). An honest impossible verdict is more useful than a made-up number, because it changes your plan now instead of after the exam.
Three verdicts are possible. Achievable: the required score is between 0% and 100% — go get it. Already secured: the required score is 0% or below — you hold the grade even with a zero on the final (still sit the exam; most courses require attendance). Impossible: above 100% — lower the target or accept the grade, and put the effort where it still moves something.
Letter grades: the table most schools use
On the common US scale: A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, C = 70–79%, D = 60–69%, F = below 60%. Plus/minus variants split each band (A− from 90, B+ from 87, and so on), but the boundaries differ by school — some set A at 93%, some at 90%. The calculator shows the letter on the 90/80/70/60 scale and labels it indicative; if your syllabus prints different cut-offs, use its numbers for the desired-grade field and ignore the letter label.
Weighted grade vs GPA vs CGPA
Three different averages get confused every term. Weighted grade is within one course: scores weighted by their share of that course. GPA is across courses in one term: grade points weighted by credit hours. CGPA is cumulative across all terms. If you need the across-courses number — for transcripts, applications and cut-offs — use our CGPA Calculator, which handles SGPA, CGPA, percentage conversion and the Bangladesh 4.0 scale. If you are counting down to the exam itself, the Exam Countdown Timer tracks NDA, UPSC and CDS dates live.
How to use the result
Use the required score to aim your revision, not to panic. If you need 70% on the final, your revision target is the 70% of the syllabus that carries the most marks — past papers tell you which topics those are. If you need 95%, you need near-perfect coverage, and the honest move is to start earlier or trade effort from a course where the grade is already secured. Recompute after every midterm: one new score changes the required final score, sometimes by a lot.
Is my data private?
Yes. Every calculation happens in your browser with plain JavaScript. Your grades and targets are never uploaded to a server, never stored, and disappear when you close the page — the same privacy posture as every tool on this site.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my weighted grade?
Weighted grade = Σ (Score × Weight) ÷ Σ Weights. Multiply each score by its weight, add the products, and divide by the total weight. For example, 88% at 20% weight, 92% at 30% and 76% at 20% give (1760+2760+1520) ÷ 70 = 86.3% on completed work.
What do I need on my final to get an A?
Use the formula Required = (Desired − Current × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight. With a current grade of 84%, a final worth 30% and a desired 90%, you need (90 − 84 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 104% — impossible, so an A is out of reach with that final. Enter your own numbers in the solver above for your exact answer.
What if the required score is over 100%?
Then the target grade is mathematically impossible with the remaining weight. Lower the target (for example from an A to a B) or accept the current trajectory — the calculator shows the verdict plainly instead of inventing a number.
What is the difference between a weighted grade and GPA or CGPA?
A weighted grade is within one course (scores weighted by their share of the course). GPA averages courses within one term by credit hours, and CGPA is cumulative across all terms. Use our CGPA Calculator for the across-courses numbers.
What letter grade is 85%?
On the common US scale, 85% is a B (80–89%). Boundaries vary by school — some set A at 93% — so always check your syllabus's cut-offs for official purposes.
Are my grades uploaded or stored when I use this calculator?
No. All calculations run in your browser. Your grades and targets never leave your device, are never sent to a server, and are gone when you close the page.

Methodology: weighted grades use Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights); the final-exam solver inverts that formula. Letter grades follow the common US 90/80/70/60 scale and are indicative — your syllabus's cut-offs are authoritative. This calculator runs entirely in your browser.
