What is a WhatsApp link?

A WhatsApp link — usually called a wa.me link or click-to-chat link — is a short web address that opens a WhatsApp conversation with a specific phone number. The official format, documented in WhatsApp's own Help Center, is https://wa.me/ followed by the full phone number in international format: country code first, digits only, no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes and no leading zero. A visitor who taps the link lands straight in a chat with you. Nobody has to save your number first, and you do not need a WhatsApp Business account to use one.

That single property is why wa.me links are everywhere: Instagram bios, Facebook pages, Google Business Profiles, website contact buttons, email signatures, packaging and shop fronts. They remove the one step where most customers drop off — saving a contact before they can message you.

How to create a WhatsApp link with this generator

Step 1 — Pick your country code. Choose your country from the list. If your country is not listed, pick "Other" and type the code yourself.

Step 2 — Type the WhatsApp number. Paste or type the number exactly as you would dial it locally, for example 01712345678. Spaces, dashes, brackets and the plus sign are stripped automatically.

Step 3 — Add a prefilled message (optional). Write the message you want waiting in the visitor's chat box, or tap one of the quick templates. A prefilled message is the difference between a tap and a conversation: the visitor only has to press send.

Step 4 — Generate, copy or scan. Hit "Generate WhatsApp Link". Copy the link for a bio or button, open it to test it on your own phone, or download the QR code for print.

Always test the link from a phone that does not have your number saved. That catches the two mistakes you cannot see on your own device: a wrong country code, and a message that got cut off by an unencoded character.

Prefilled messages and URL encoding, explained

A prefilled message is added with the ?text= parameter: https://wa.me/8801712345678?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20order. Everything after ?text= must be URL-encoded — spaces become %20, commas %2C, line breaks %0A, and emoji become their UTF-8 percent-escaped bytes. This generator applies encodeURIComponent for you, so you can type a natural message with punctuation and emoji and trust that it opens cleanly in both WhatsApp mobile and WhatsApp Web.

One honest limit: a prefilled message is only a suggestion sitting in the chat box. It is never sent automatically, and the visitor can edit or delete it before pressing send. That is by design — WhatsApp does not let a link send a message on someone's behalf.

WhatsApp link + QR code: the pair that covers everywhere

A link covers every place people tap: bios, buttons, ads and messages. A QR code covers every place people point a camera: business cards, packaging, posters, shop counters and event stalls. This page gives you both from the same number and message, so you never maintain two versions of the same contact point. The QR code is drawn on a canvas in your browser with the same open library our QR Code Generator uses, and it never expires — wa.me links have no expiry date, unlike some short links that stop working when a service shuts down.

If you only need a QR code for something else — a website, a WiFi password, plain text — use the dedicated QR Code Generator, which adds colours, a logo and more formats.

Where businesses actually use wa.me links

Instagram and Facebook bios. Social profiles give you one link. A wa.me link turns it into a direct line to sales or support instead of a homepage visitors have to navigate.

Website contact buttons. A floating "Chat on WhatsApp" button that opens a prefilled chat converts far better than a contact form, because the visitor stays in an app they already use every day.

Ads and Google Business Profile. A click-to-chat link behind an ad means the click becomes a conversation immediately, with the ad's context already typed as the prefilled message — for example, "Hi! I saw your ad for…" so you know exactly which ad worked.

Print. The QR version of the same link goes on cards, menus, receipts and packaging, where a tappable link cannot exist.

Small businesses in Bangladesh and India use this pattern heavily, because customers there prefer chatting over calling or emailing — and because a wa.me link works whether the customer has your number saved or not.

Bangladesh numbers: the 0-to-880 rule

Bangladeshi mobile numbers are dialled locally with a leading zero, like 01712345678. For a wa.me link, drop the zero and add the country code 880: 8801712345678. So the full link is https://wa.me/8801712345678. This generator does that conversion for you when you pick Bangladesh and type a number starting with 0. The same rule applies everywhere: India's 09876543210 becomes 919876543210, Pakistan's 03… becomes 92… without the zero. If your number already starts with the country code, it is used exactly as entered.

Troubleshooting: why a WhatsApp link fails

"Phone number shared via URL is invalid." The number is in the wrong format — usually a plus sign, a space, a dash, or a leading zero left in. Regenerate with digits only.

The chat opens but the number "is not on WhatsApp". The format is right, but that number has no active WhatsApp account. Double-check the digits and the country code; one wrong digit sends visitors to a stranger or to nobody.

The prefilled message looks broken. A character was not encoded — typically an &, which starts a new URL parameter and cuts the message off. Our generator encodes everything, so regenerate here rather than hand-building the URL.

The link works for you but not for customers. You tested on your own phone, where your number is saved. Test from a phone without your number saved, and on WhatsApp Web too.

wa.me vs api.whatsapp.com/send

WhatsApp documents two addresses for the same feature: the short wa.me form and the longer api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=… form. They open the same chat. Prefer wa.me: it is shorter, cleaner on a card or in a bio, and it is the format WhatsApp itself recommends in its click-to-chat documentation. This generator outputs wa.me links only.

Is it free, and is my number safe?

Yes, and yes. There is no sign-up, no account and no limit on how many links you generate. The link is built entirely in your browser with plain JavaScript — your phone number and message are never uploaded to any server, never stored, and disappear when you close the page. That is the same privacy posture as every tool on this site: if a tool can run in your browser, it does.

Frequently asked questions

What is a WhatsApp link generator?

A WhatsApp link generator builds a wa.me click-to-chat link from a phone number: https://wa.me/ followed by the number in international format. Anyone who taps the link lands in a WhatsApp chat with that number, without saving it first. You can also add a prefilled message that waits in the chat box.

Do I need a WhatsApp Business account to use wa.me links?

No. Click-to-chat works with any WhatsApp account, personal or business. A Business account adds catalogues and automated replies inside WhatsApp, but the link itself needs nothing more than an active WhatsApp number.

How do I add a prefilled message to a WhatsApp link?

Append ?text= with your URL-encoded message, like https://wa.me/8801712345678?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20order. This generator encodes the message for you — just type it naturally, including spaces, punctuation and emoji.

How do I format a Bangladesh number for a wa.me link?

Drop the leading zero and add 880. So 01712345678 becomes 8801712345678, and the link is https://wa.me/8801712345678. Pick Bangladesh in the country list above and the conversion happens automatically.

Why does my link say the phone number is not on WhatsApp?

The format is correct but that number has no active WhatsApp account, or a digit is wrong. Re-check the number and the country code, and test the link from a phone that does not have your number saved.

Is my phone number uploaded or stored when I generate a link?

No. The link is built entirely in your browser. Your number and message never leave your device, are never sent to a server, and are gone when you close the page.
