UTM Builder — Free Campaign URL Builder for GA4
UTM Builder
Your tagged URL will appear here...
Existing query parameters and #anchors are preserved, old utm_ values are replaced (never duplicated), and values are encoded so spaces and & cannot break the link. Nothing uploads — everything runs in your browser.
What is a UTM code?
UTM stands for Urchin Traffic Monitor, named after Urchin, the analytics tool Google acquired in 2005 and rebuilt into Google Analytics. A UTM code is a set of utm_ parameters appended to a URL — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content — that tell your analytics platform exactly which campaign, channel and link placement brought each visitor. Without them, clicks from emails, newsletters, social bios and QR codes arrive with no referral data and get dumped into "direct" traffic, making it impossible to tell which campaign actually worked.
What each parameter means
utm_source answers "which site or list sent them" — newsletter, google, facebook, instagram. utm_medium answers "what kind of link it was" — email, cpc, social, banner. utm_campaign names the initiative — spring_sale, q3_product_launch. utm_term is for paid search: the keyword that triggered the ad. utm_content tells ad variants or placements apart — banner-top vs link-footer — so A/B tests report cleanly. GA4 also reads utm_id, an optional campaign ID for importing cost data. Source, medium and campaign are the working minimum; term and content are optional refinements.
Naming conventions that keep reports clean
UTM values are case-sensitive in Google Analytics: Email and email become two separate rows and split one campaign in half. Pick lowercase and underscores, write the convention down, and use it every time — this builder's lowercase toggle is on by default for exactly that reason. Avoid spaces (they encode as + or %20 and look messy), avoid special characters, and keep names short and recognizable in six months: spring_sale_2026 beats ss26_final_v3_REAL. Consistency matters more than cleverness — reporting is only as tidy as the naming.
Where UTM data shows up in GA4
In GA4, go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, and switch the dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign to see your tagged visits grouped by the values you set. UTM parameters are session-scoped by default: the campaign that started the session gets the credit. If a link has no UTM tags, GA4 falls back to the referrer or calls it direct — which is why untagged newsletter and social links silently under-report your best channels.
Common UTM mistakes
First, tagging internal links: UTMs on your own site's navigation overwrite the original campaign and steal its credit — never tag links that stay on your domain. Second, inconsistent casing, which splits campaigns (see above). Third, hand-building URLs by gluing ?utm_ onto links that already have a query string or a #anchor — the result breaks or duplicates parameters; this builder parses the URL properly instead. Fourth, using a different campaign name for every ad variant instead of utm_content — variants belong in content, the campaign stays one name. Fifth, forgetting to test: click your own tagged link once and confirm GA4's real-time report shows the expected source and campaign.
Frequently asked questions
What is a UTM code?
A UTM code is a set of utm_ parameters added to a URL — source, medium, campaign, term and content — that tell analytics tools like GA4 exactly which campaign and channel brought each visitor, instead of dumping the click into a vague referral bucket.
What do utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign mean?
Source is where the traffic comes from (newsletter, google, facebook). Medium is the channel type (email, cpc, social). Campaign is the specific initiative (spring_sale, q3_launch). Together they are the minimum for clean campaign reporting.
Should UTM values be lowercase?
Yes. UTM values are case-sensitive in Google Analytics, so Email and email become two separate rows and split the same campaign in half. Use lowercase and underscores consistently — this builder normalizes to lowercase by default.
What is the difference between utm_content and utm_term?
utm_content distinguishes links within one campaign, such as two buttons in the same email or two ad creatives. utm_term is for paid search only — it records the keyword that triggered the ad.
Should I add UTM tags to internal links on my own site?
No. Tagging links that stay on your own domain overwrites the original campaign that brought the visitor and steals its credit. UTM tags belong only on links that bring people to your site from outside.
Where do I see UTM data in GA4?
In GA4 go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, then switch the dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign. Your tagged visits appear grouped under the source, medium and campaign values you set.
